How to Do My Own Self-Swab#
Step-by-step instructions for completing a vaginal self-swab at the lab for BV / yeast or other vaginal-swab testing.
If your TeleTest panel includes a vaginal swab and you'd like to self-collect at the lab, follow the steps below. The lab will provide the swab kit at your visit.
Self-collection is optional - you can also ask the lab technician or visit a walk-in clinic and have a clinician collect the swab if you'd prefer.
Self-collection steps#
- Remove the tube cap and set it nearby (don't discard).
- Insert the swab into the vagina 3-5 cm past the vaginal opening and gently rotate for 10-30 seconds, making sure to touch the vaginal walls so the swab picks up cells.
- Withdraw the swab without touching the tip on anything else.
- Place the swab into the transport tube and press firmly to close.
- Hand the closed tube to the lab technician.
When NOT to self-swab#
- During your period - menstrual blood can affect the accuracy of swab results. Your requisition is valid for 6 months, so you can wait until your period ends.
- If you don't feel comfortable - ask the lab technician or visit a walk-in clinic and a clinician will collect the swab on-site.
